Hyundai Teases The New Ioniq 6
Hyundai has just revealed uncamouflaged images of its new upcoming electric car, the Ioniq 6. A new 4 door coupe that will compete with the likes of the Polestar 2, BMW i4 and Tesla Model 3. Set to hit UK roads within the first quarter of 2023, ordering for this model will likely open during the back end of 2022. Today we take a quick look at Hyundai’s latest electric proposition.
30’s design brought into the 21st century
The Applied Leasing office is split on whether we actually like the look of the car. Shall we say, it is very marmite. Hyundai state the Ioniq 6 borrows heavily from ‘streamliner’ aircraft designs from the 1930’s. Hyundai’s vice president of styling, SangYup Lee states “The Thirties showcased the perfect combination of design and engineering,” he explains. “There was a big debate internally about whether we should call the new car Streamliner. The best design doesn’t create customers, it creates fans.” Recently, the Korean car brand seem to be plucking random decades from a hat, with the mega-popular Ioniq 5 being heavily inspired from mid-seventies automotive design.
Originally previewed in 2020 when it was called the ‘Prophecy concept’, the Ioniq 6 is Hyundai’s first stab at the electric saloon segment. If previous form is a predictor of things to come, the ‘6’ should be a success. With the aforementioned Ioniq 5 and all electric Kona holding strong footholds within their respective markets.
E-GMP and even more acronyms
Now, performance figures have yet to be released. July 14th is when Hyundai will unveil the curtain on those numbers. If we were the betting type, then predictably the Ioniq 6 will use the same Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) found within the Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Genesis GV60 – which by now is familiar but still impressive tech. V2L (vehicle to load) technology should be featured within the new ‘6’ , this turns the car into a mobile powerbank.
As for the interior and certain exterior details, Hyundai have dipped into the mid-eighties for inspiration. Strokes of neon pepper the interior cabin, logo’s embossed in more neon, clean cut lines on the dash and a pair of 12 inch infotainment screens. Pixel-style light clusters are featured on the sloping rear end.
