Volkswagen iD-3 rival? Introducing the MG-4

MG Motor UK have released more details of their brand new EV model, the MG4. The MG4 is MG’s third full electric vehicle and will be their smallest EV to date. Set in the same bracket as the VW iD-3, Nissan Leaf and Cupra Born. They are due to hit UK roads from September this year. Today we take a quick look at MG’s latest EV offering.

The new MG-4 will take on the VW iD-3

What is it?

First official looks at the MG4 see it sits within the C-segment hatchback market. At 4,287mm long, 1,836mm wide and 1,506mm it competes directly with the ever-popular VW iD-3. SUV’s and Crossbacks maybe taking over the automotive landscape, but cars this size are still extremely popular within the European markets.

Previous full electric models the MG ZS and MG-5 have made a considerable dent within the world of EV’s – if the released images are anything to go by, we predict the MG-4 will steal some of the spotlight from its competitors. Additionally, it will be the first MG model to introduce the new MSP (Modular Scalable Platform) architecture.

Design and performance

As for design, the MG-4 looks quite unlike any other derivative MG currently offer. A sharp and pointy front end with aggressive bumper styling is paired with acute angled headlights featuring dynamic LED day-time driving lights. On the back end as full-width LED taillight bar is placed below the back window. A split-design rear spoiler crowns the top of the hatch lid. On the side robust SUV inspired cladding lines the bottom of the doors.

MG state the previously mentioned MSP platform is a key element in creating such a low-slung electric hatchback. The batteries used within this system are only 110mm thick. At launch the two battery sizes are offered. The base car will feature a 51kWh underfloor battery and will get up to 217 miles (WLTP tested) electric range. A longer-range model will also be available and will be fitted with a 64kWh battery which will offer up to 280 miles (WLTP tested) electric range.

David Allison, Head of Product & Planning at MG Motor UK, said: “The MG4 EV is a key part of the next phase of growth for MG. Our new MSP architecture will enable us to offer multiple options for the rapidly expanding UK electric car market, with all choices reinforcing our reputation for outstanding design, market-leading technology, and excellent value for money.”

Due to go on sale within the UK in September – order books will likely open during the latter summer months. We expect pricing to be around the £25,000 mark for the base model and around £30,000 for the longer range.
