Introducing the New Peugeot 408 Fastback!

Peugeot has just announced another cast member to its line-up – introducing the 408 Fastback. Due to land on UK roads early 2023, today we take a look at Peugeots latest offering.

Wedged between the existing Peugeot 308 and 508, the 408 enters the ever-growing world of Fastbacks. What is a fastback I hear you say? Imagine the meeting point between a hatchback and a saloon. Fastbacks typically tend to offer higher ride height, longer rear-tail and larger boot space. The 408 is based on the same platform found within the Peugeot 308, Vauxhall Astra, and Citroen C5-X.

Design and Interior

Aggressive in styling inside and outside the cabin. Linda Jackson, CEO of Peugeot, said “At Peugeot, we believe that life is better with allure. With its unique looks, innovative fastback silhouette and unbridled elegance, the new 408 is the perfect expression of Peugeot’s philosophy and inventiveness.” Judging by the images we cannot say we disagree. It is a good-looking car. Strong angled front wings and sloping rear end, beef up the profile.

The interior echoes this design philosophy. Sharp acute lines pepper the dash accompanied with a flat-bottomed race style steering wheel and an intuitive infotainment system give credence to this. The roster of tech is pretty much on-point. Matrix LED headlights are available, and a host of sensors for motorway lane-centring and advanced cruise, plus rear radars for blind-spot monitoring, and 360-degree parking cameras. The 408 also comes with a night vision option! If you thought that was what headlamps are for, we mean an infra-red camera and display with a 250m range. Super snazzy stuff.

Engines and Drivetrains.

The entry-level Peugeot 408 comes with a 130hp 1.2-litre petrol engine. All models get an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard, there is no manual option.

You’ll also be able to get the new Peugeot 408 with a choice of two 1.2-litre petrol engines with a plug-in hybrid system. The cheaper of the two produces 180hp, but if that’s not enough you can get a version with 225hp. An all-electric e-408 is in the works and will be available at a later date.
